Objective: To adapt the Receptiveness to Opposing Views (ROV) Scale into Chinese and examine its reliability and validity among Chinese university students.
Methods: From June to August 2025, 794 university students were recruited through online and offline approaches to complete the Chinese version of the ROV Scale. The sample was randomly divided into two subsamples for exploratory factor analysis (n=402) and confirmatory factor analysis (n=392) to examine the factor structure of the scale. Subsequently, reliability, validity, and gender measurement invariance analyses were conducted to evaluate its psychometric properties. Three weeks after the initial testing, 87 participants from the sample completed the scale again for test-retest assessment.
Results: The finalized Chinese version comprised 18 items and four factors. The total scale and all subscales demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (α= 0.773-0.902). The proposed factor structure showed good model fit (χ²/df = 1.976, CFI = 0.953, TLI = 0.944, RMSEA = 0.050, SRMR = 0.052). Criterion-related validity analyses indicated that the total score was positively correlated with perspective taking (r = 0.390, p < 0.001) and cognitive curiosity (r = 0.211, p < 0.001). Gender invariance testing supported a high degree of structural consistency across genders, with limited gender differences in the manifestation of the latent constructs.
Conclusion: The Chinese version of the ROV Scale is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing receptiveness to opposing views among Chinese university students.
